This view is looking northeast from the Bright Angel Trail along the slope of upper Garden Creek Canyon. The top of the Redwall Limestone is in the lower left. This is overlain by the Supai Group. The uppermost sandstone ledges of the Supai Group are the Esplanade Sandstone (visible in the right foreground). The Hermit Shale is very poorly exposed between the top of the Esplanade Sandstone and the base of the massive white cliffs of the Coconino Sandstone. The slope above the white cliff is the Toroweap Formation. The Kaibab Limestone forms the cliff caprock of the South Rim. The Kaibab Limestone is the caprock of the regional Kaibab Uplift through which the Colorado River and its tributaries carved the canyon. |
