| This view is looking west from the Bright Angel Trail along the upper canyon slope of the South Rim. This view shows the top of the massive sandstone cliff of the Coconino Sandstone overlain by the forest-covered sandstone and shale beds of the Toroweap Formation. The steep cliff at the top of the slope is the Kaibab Formation that forms the caprock along the South Rim of the canyon. The same sequence of rock formations appears frosted with a covering of snow on the North Rim in the distance. The Battle Ship, a butte of Esplanade Sandstone of the upper Supai Group, is in the lower right. |
