Bright Angel Trail
This view is looking north from along the Bright Angel Trail where it ascends from the Inner Gorge. Bright Angel Canyon is in the distance on the opposite side of the Inner Gorge. Bright Angel Canyon basically follows the trace of the Bright Angel Fault (as mapped by Billingsley, 2000). This fault, or rather fault system because it is locally complex, extends across the Grand Canyon from the vicinity of the South Rim's park lodges to the North Rim. In this view, the Precambrian Unkar Group (Bass Formation, Hakatai Shale, and Shinumo Quartzite) are exposed on the north side of the Inner Gorge, but they are mostly missing below the Great Unconformity beneath the Tapeats Sandstone on the south side of the Inner Gorge (with the exception of the small remnant of Bass Formation preserved next to the fault near the center of this image).
