View of the South Kaibab Trail where is descends through the base of the massive cliffs of the Redwall Escarpment. The Redwall Limestone of Mississippian age rests unconformable on a surface of older Paleozoic-age sedimentary rocks (Devonian- age rocks and Cambrian-age rocks where the Devonian section is locally missing). Along the South Kaibab Trail, the Devonian-age Temple Butte Limestone is difficult to differentiate from the overlying Redwall Limestone because the rocks have a similar appearance and the Temple Butte generally lacks clearly identifiable fossils (Beus, 1987). |
