Kaibab Trail
The Cambrian-age Muav Limestone occurs at the base of the Redwall escarpment and overlies the slope-forming Bright Angel Shale. In this view is from the South Kaibab Trail the lower cliff on the right is the top of the Muav Limestone (Cambrian age). Above the ledge is a massive layer of the Temple Butte Limestone (Devonian age). Above the next ledge is the lighter-gray cliff of the lower Redwall Limestone (Mississippian age). Unconformable boundaries between these flat-lying sedimentary formations represent gaps in time associated with long periods of non deposition or erosion, and sediments of those time periods were not preserved in the area (Beus, 1987).
