This view is looking north along Bright Angel Canyon about a mile north of Phantom Ranch. Horizontally layered Cambrian-age Tapeats Sandstone rests on an angular unconformable surface above Precambrian-age Unkar Group sedimentary rocks (to the left) and the older metamorphic rocks (schist and granitic rocks of Vishnu Basement Rocks (below and to the right). This view shows an ancient fault, near the upper center of the image, where the Unkar Group sedimentary rocks are truncated against the Vishnu Basement Rocks. The fault is truncated at the top by the Tapeats Sandstone. |
