| Balanced Rock is located along the main park road near the Windows section of Arches National Park. Note the difference between the wavy shale, siltstone, and sandstone layers of the lower Dewey Bridge Member of the Carmel Formation in relation to the smooth, more massive Slick Rock Sandstone Member of the Entrada Sandstone (Doelling, 2000). The sedimentary rocks are nearshore marine in origin , formed from sandy and muddy sediments deposited in and along the margins of a shallow seaway (such as titdal flats, offshore bars, lagoonal environments) that spread across the region west of the ancestral Colorado Rocky Mountains during the Jurassic Period (Peterson, 1972). |
