| Moonshiner Arch is actually a remnant of a cavern in limestone beds of the Slade Formation and carbonate beds of the underlying Borden Formation. The arch got its name from the fact that in the past the location was used for illegal alcohol distillation in its past (Ettensohn, 2010). Moonshiner Arch is arguably a natural bridge, rather than an arch. Natural bridges form from stream incision where erosion along two bends in a river carve a passage, allowing water to flow through a new cutoff beneath a resistant rock layer (for more examples see Arches National Park and Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah. |
