This view is looking south from the middle of Hoover Dam along the Colorado River in Black Canyon. Arizona is on the left and Nevada is on the right. The dark rocks exposed in Black Canyon are middle Miocene-age volcanic rocks-between about 11 to 16 million years old (Beard and others, 2007). The rectangular building on either side of the canyon are spillway vents. Part of the generator facility is in the lower left. The Hoover Dam Visitor Center is on the right. |
