Joshua tree forest near West Entrance
Weathering and erosion of granitic bedrock in the Little San Bernardino Mountains produces spheroidal-shaped boulders and a "grussy" soil (rusty red, sandy sediment rich in quartz and feldspar grains) that accumulated on alluvial fans that fill the high valleys in the park area. This view is looking west from Park Boulevard about 4 miles east of the West Entrance Station.
