Precambrian rocks in upper Colored Canyon
The dark, Precambrian-age crystalline basement rocks stand out in contrasts to the overlying light-colored sedimentary rocks in upper Painted Canyon. The granitic and metamorphic basement complex is locally called the Orocopia Schist. In the upper canyon area (eastern end) in the Mecca Hills the Orocopia Schist is in fault contact with crystalline basement rock of the Chuckawalla Complex that consists of Precambrian age metamorphic rocks with Mesozoic age intrusive rocks (Sylvester and Smith, 1987).
