| A Joshua tree and granite butte (called an inselberg) on the east side of Park Boulevard at the Quail Springs Picnic Area. inselbergs are remnants outcrops formed by the long-term weathering and erosion effects on jointed and fractured granitic bedrock in desert environments. inselbergs occur where deep soil weathering profiles formed under humid conditions in the distant past. The finer, softer weathered material has been eroded away by wind or infrequent storm precipitation, leaving behind the more resistant portions of the bedrock left behind as boulder piles or small buttes of spheroidally rounded bedrock rising above a pediment or alluvium covered surface (Trent, 1997; Trent, 1998). |
