The name Hopewell comes from the name of a Chillicothe land owner named Mordecai Hopewell. Archaeological excavations were conducted on his land in the 19th century. The site on his land had all of the typical Hopewell cultural features (mounds, earthworks, and artifacts) and became the type site of the culture (references: AIA, 2009).
