Archaeologist have determined that the Mound City site was one of many used for funeral rituals by a Native American civilization that flourished between 200 B.C. and 500 A.D. The name Hopewell had been applied to this ancient culture in Ohio. The Hopewell Culture is part of the greater Middle Woodlands Culture that had related (or similar) cultural mound building groups in what is now Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and New York.
