El Malpais
Several thousand-year-old pahoehoe-type lava flows still preserve their nearly fresh appearance in El Malpais National Monument. This view is along the historic Zuni-Acoma Trail that cuts across the national monument. In the distance, cliffs of Jurassic-age Zuni Sandstone are capped with a rimrock-forming conglomeratic sandstone of the Upper Cretaceous Dakota Sandstone (NPS, 2009e).
