| Massive cliffs of olive-colored conglomerate and tuffaceous sandstone crop out near the pass between Titanothere Canyon and Titus Canyon. Titanothere Canyon is named after a famous rhinoceros-like mammal discovered in the Oligocene sedimentary deposits in the upper part of the canyon (Stock, 1936). Titus Canyon is named after Morris Titus, a young mining engineer who vanished on an ill-fated gold-prospecting expedition destined for the Panamint Range in 1907. Titus vanished along with another man while searching for water somewhere in the canyon vicinity, but he and the gold he supposedly carried were never found (Palmer, 1989). |
