Leadfield is a ghost town along Titus Canyon Drive. The town was established as a hoax silver claim. The town promoter, C. C. Julian, blasted some tunnels and salted them with lead ore he had brought from Nevada. He then lured Eastern investors, miners, and other hopefuls to move to his new town, and even conned the U.S. Government to build a post office. For six months over between August, 1926 and February, 1927, over 300 people tried to make a strike, but they never found anything but traces of ore. The post office closed, and the town's people vanished, leaving behind a few holes and ruined shacks (Greene and Latschar, 1981). |
