About 1 mi north of Kayenta, for which unit is probably named, Navajo Co., AZ, and about 20 mi south of Monument Valley-Navajo Mountain region, San Juan Co., UT, and Coconino Co., AZ (Baker, 1936).

First used as the middle formation of Glen Canyon Group (Baker, 1936). Revised, Tenney Canyon Tongue designated as upper tongue of Kayenta Formation (Averitt and others, 1955). Overview (Harshberger and others, 1957). Age modified (Lewis and others, 1961). Overview (Averitt, 1962). Areal limits (Wilson and Stewart, 1967). Overview (Peterson and Pipiringos, 1979).
