Canyonlands National Park

Vertical joints in the Cedar Mesa Sandstone are zones of weathering and erosion, resulting in the formation of the unique landscape features in the Needles District. Note the difference between the packed earth of the hiking trail and the dark, rough surface of the fragile microbiotic crust (see Belnap, 2001).
