Lake Mead National Recreation Area
Location Map This view is looking east toward the eroded mine tailings pile from the Katherine Mine with the southern Black Mountains of Arizona in the distance. Katherine Mine that is located 3 miles northeast of the current Katherine Landing Marina. A gold mining rush began in the mid-1860s with the discovery of gold in the Katherine-Union Pass area in the southern Black Mountain (Union Pass is about 10 miles east of Davis Dam on Highway 68). This began the episodic boom to bust gold and silver mining activities in the region. The settlement of Katherine was established on the shore of the Colorado River (now flooded by Lake Mojave in the Katherine Landing area). Development of the Katherine Mine and its extensions began in 1900 and continued intermittently through 1943 (DesertUSA.com, 2010).
