Lake Mead National Recreation Area
This zoomed-in view from near milepost 20 on the Northshore Road shows successive hogback ridges. Outcrops of red and gray sandstone and conglomerate of the Horse Spring Formation crop out in the foreground and on left and right. A red ridge of Aztec Sandstone runs across the center of the image beyond the Horse Spring Formation outcrops. This area is called the "Bowl of Fire" and is part of a large northeast-trending anticline. In the distance are Muddy Peak other high peaks in the Muddy Mountains (Tingley and others, 2001; Beard and others, 2007).
