View of the Scioto River with muddy cutbank and forest on the opposite side of the river.
This view shows the river banks of the Scioto River. The town of Chillicothe was established along the banks and terraces along the Scioto River. The town of Chillicothe got its name from a Shawnee Indian leader's clan. A Indian village named Chillicothe was located at Hopetown, about three miles north of present-day Chillicothe. The modern town was established around 1796 when early settlers moved in and started business operations. Chillicothe was Ohio’s first state capital between 1802 until 1810.
