An indian mound in Fort Ancient Memorial Park
This view shows one of Indian mounds at Fort Ancient (separate from the earthen wall structures). Mounds are often burial sites. The ancient Mound Builders (as they have been called at Fort Ancient and other Ohio archaeological sites) were part of a larger regional cultural heritage community of the Middle Woodlands Period (between about 2,800 and 2,000 years before present). The size and distribution of the known archaeological sites from this period, and the nature and distribution of unique artifacts, suggest that regional trade and cultural exchanges took place between isolated settlements and communities in the region during that time.
