Hayden Valley is part of the Yellowstone River valley between Yellowstone Lake and Upper Falls. The natural prairie is a prime wildlife viewing area. The prairie is underlain by glacial till and outwash deposited by piedmont glaciers that extensively covered the parts of the Yellowstone throughout the Quaternary Period (Fritz, 1985).
