This south-facing view is of Lower Falls (also known historically as Great Falls) of the Yellowstone River as viewed from Point Lookout on the west rim of the canyon. Point Lookout is located along the one-way Canyon Village loop road. A resistant layer of volcanic tuff is responsible for the location of the falls. Much of the other rock in the canyon is highly altered by weathering caused by rock-groundwater interaction. Click here to see a recent photograph of Lower Falls. |
