| Wukoki Pueblo ruins in Wupatki National Monument. Archeologist Jesse Walter Fewkes conducted a partial excavation on the site in 1896. Among his discoveries, Fewkes found pottery, a shell bracelet, and jewelry with inlaid turquoise. The three-story ruins had seven rooms and probably supported two or three families (NPS, 2005). In 1900, archeologist Jesse Fewkes referred to the Hopi word Wupatki for the name "big house" - the term stayed with both the ruins and became the namesake for the national monument (Northern Arizona University, [2010b]). |
