Wind Cave National Park
Wind Cave displays many dissolution features. In fact, the cavern has very few cave travertine deposits (such as stalagtite, stalagmites, column, etc.) visible along tour routes. However, the Mississippian limestone host rock for the cavern has many small fractures filled mostly with calcite and other minerals that add color, erosional resistance, and textures that are very different than the original limestone. These fracture filling deposits give rise to the "box works" found throughout the cavern (Feldmann, 1997; NPS, 2009).
