The Kaibab Limestone consists of even-bedded layers of dolomitic limestone that preserve brachiopods and other invertebrate fossils. The fossils show that warm marine waters of a shallow seaway covered this region in the Permian Period, about 270 million years ago (NPS, 2008; Mathis and Bowman, 2005). |
