A trail system is gradually being developed in the region
around the volcano along routes considered safe for public access. Many
parts of the volcano and debris field remain unstable ground since the eruption.
Collapse of ash and rock debris are still occurring throughout the crater
and resurgent dome, and along the redeveloping stream and river channels
in the debris field. Much of the recoverable timber knocked down by the
blast of the volcanic eruption has been removed. However, many areas along
the high hillsides, particularly on the area protected from the direct blast,
still display fallen trees oriented away from the source of the blast from
Mount St. Helens. |
