Red River Gorge

Red River Gorge Geologic area is an erosionally dissected plateau consisting of flat-lying strata (part of the larger Cumberland Plateau of eastern Kentucky). Pennyslvanian-age sandstone forms the caprock cliffs along the canyon rim. Mississippian-age limestone, mudrocks underlie the forested slopes in the valley (click here to see a stratigraphic chart of the Red River Gorge Geologic Area).
