| This small pond is near Winsor Castle at Pipe Spring National Monument. Historically, Pipe Spring was one of the rare sources of water on the Arizona Strip. When the Mormons constructed Winsor Castle, they diverted the spring to flow through the building before pouring into the pond. The water from the pond was then used to water livestock and irrigate nearby gardens and orchards. However, water withdrawal from wells throughout the area near the park has caused the once artesian spring to quit flowing. Water is now pumped in from a nearby well (NPS, 2009b). |
