This view shows the Betatakin Overlook Trail and the back of the Visitor Center. The trail crosses slickrock consisting of crossbedded layers of the Navajo Sandstone. The crossbedding is typical of sand dunes transported and deposited by wind. During Early Jurassic time when the sediments of the Navajo Sandstone accumulated, vast sand dune fields covered much of the Colorado Plateau region and beyond (Loop and others, 2004; NPS, 2007). |
