Teddybear cholla is also called jumping cholla for good reason. The pod-like joints of the cactus break off easily and can become attached to clothing or shoes. Inch-long barbed needles can easily become imbedded in skin. Don't walk your dog or bring young children near cholla! Although the plant has bright yellow flowers in April, the seed pods are typically sterile. The plant reproduces from the fallen joints that can transported by attaching to animals, washing down gullies, or tumbled by the wind. |
