Location Map The parks' northern entrance is at milepost 43 on the Northshore Road. Lake Mead National Recreation Area was established by Congress on October 8, 1964 and is the nation's first National Recreation Area (U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, 2008). The park's main features are reservoirs on the Colorado River-Lake Mead, formed by Hoover Dam, and Lake Mohave, formed by Davis Dam. The two reservoirs make up only about 13 present of the land area of the park. Some development and multi-use areas exists around the park's marinas and access roads, however, the vast majority of the park is mostly rugged desert wilderness.
