Squaw Peaks are two eroded remnants of dark volcanic stocks surrounded by light-colored volcanic tephra deposits. This view is near river mile 42. The bench-like surface about two-hundred feet above the lake level is an older Quaternary-age river terrace covered with gravels that was left behind when the Colorado River went on to carve a deeper channel in the canyon.
