This view is looking north along the Grapevine Canyon Road (Route 20) toward the core of the Newberry Mountains of southern Nevada. The Newberry Mountains consist of Miocene-age granitic igneous intrusions. The high peak is Spirit Mountain. Many of the buttes, pinnacles, and spires closely represent individual plutons within the larger intrusive complex that formed about 17.4 to 15.3 million years ago (Walker and others, 2007; Lang and others, 2008). |
