Archaeologists have found evidence of Archaic Indian at several campsites and villages locations within the park. Burials of Archaic Indians have been found at other Ohio locations but not at Shawnee Lookout. One excavated site at Shawnee Lookout uncovered the remnants of a rare kiln used to fire pottery. Artifacts found include atlatl weighs, smoking pipes, marine shell ornaments. Artifacts associated with late Archaic Indians include beads and awls made of copper.
Artifacts found in excavated archaeological sites at Shawnee include bones of deer, fish, and bird, turtle shells, and corn and walnuts. Chert spearpoints found in the area represent craft and source material representing all the periods of periods of Native American cultural communities in the region, including more ancient Adena, Hopewell, and Fort Ancient, and later Miami and Shawnee Indians nearer to the later Colonial contact period.
