This view shows a large glacial erratic (boulder) on display at Shawnee Lookout Park. Gravel and boulders derived from sources in Canada can be found in the hillsides and river valleys throughout the region (they are very different in composition form the native bedrock in the southwestern Ohio region). These deposits illustrates that the continental glaciers covered this region before the formation of the incised valleys and floodplains of the modern Ohio and Great Miami Rivers.
The boulder is placed in within the ceremonial grounds at Shawnee Lookout Park. The brass plaque attached to the boulder commemorates Daniel Carter Beard (1850-1941), the first National Scout Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America.
Daniel Beard was born in Cincinnati and grew up in Covington, Kentucky and got a start to his career by serving as a young scout in the Union Army.
