Path and grounds at Mound City earthworks.
This view at Mound City Group shows a park pathway leading to a gap in the earthen walls that surrounds the necropolis - the ancient ceremonial site. Within the border wall is a field with many burial mounds of the Hopewell Indians. Borrow pits used to create the earthworks are on either side of the path.

The Mound City Group was originally designated Mound City Group National Monument until the park was expanded to create the larger Hopewell Culture National Historic Park. The new, expanded park included four other ancient Hopewell cultural sites in other locations in the Chillicothe area (in Ross County, Ohio). The Mound City Group part of the park covers about 120 acres and includes the park’s visitor center. The the new park lands cover nearly 1,800 acres.
