dogwood tree in bloom next to an Indian Mound in Shawnee Lookout Park

Shawnee Lookout is home to a beautiful woodland forest, including this dogwood next to a mound. Dogwood trees (Cornus sp.) have attractive spring blooms, with typically abundant white, cross-shaped flowers. Most dogwoods are understory trees that grow in the shade of evergreens and other woodland trees where cool, moist soil conditions exist. There are more than 45 described species of dogwood that live in temperate climates. When not blooming with their bright spring flowers, you can also identify dogwoods by their bark.
