Guadalupe Mountains National Park
This view of El Capitan is from along Texas Highway 62/180 where the highway crosses Guadalupe Canyon. The massive limestone of the Permian-age reef tract (Capitan Limestone Formation) and the finer calcareous shale, sandstone, and mudrocks of the fore-reef system (Cherry Canyon Formation) are well exposed on the flanks of El Capitan (Hayes, 1964).
