Guadalupe Mountains National Park
McIntyre Canyon cuts through Frijoles Ridge, a northeast-trending ridge along the southeastern flank of the Guadalupe Mountains. The El Capitan Reef tract forms the core of Frijoles Ridge. As a result, a nearly perfectly exposed cross section of the ancient reef is exposed along the sides of the canyon. The National Park Service has created a "Permian Reef Geology Trail" on the mountain flank shown in the distance in this image (see Bebout and Kerans, 1993).
