As stalagmites increase in size, their sides typically develop a flowstone lattice along their sides. Stalactites typically have small tube-like passages that deliver water to their lower tips, whereas stalagmites form with water drips and splashes on their surface. It is not unusual to have a tiny stalactite on the ceiling above a massive stalagmite beneath it on the cavern floor.
