Ginko Fossil Forest State Park
Fossil wood (logs) are on display outside the visitor center at Ginkgo Petrified Forest. The Wanapum Dam reservoir floods the Columbia River Gorge. Massive basalt flows are visible in the cliffs in the distance. The fossil wood comes from ancient layers of bog deposits preserved between lava flows (Wheeler and others, 2002).
