This petroglyph panel is carved into the desert varnish on the crossbedded Navajo Sandstone. Note the images of desert bighorn. These carvings are along the base of the cliffs in Glen Canyon several miles south of the Glen Canyon Dam. Construction of Glen Canyon Dam in the early 1960s initiated one of largest archeological salvage operations in American history before the rising waters of Lake Powell flooded Glen Canyon (Jennings, 1998). |
