Thunderhead over Fossil Butte
This view along the Fossil Lake Trail shows a thunderhead rising over Fossil Butte. Fossil Butte receives an average of 9-12 inches of precipitation per year; most of it falls as snow. The park averages only 59 frost-free days per year. Winters season can be bitterly cold, whereas the summer high temperatures rarely exceed 90 degrees (National Park Foundation, 1991).
