Death Valley Railroad (Number 2) is on display at the Furnace Creek Museum. This narrow gauge was built in 1914 to haul Borax from historic mines in Ryan, California to a rail intersection about 20 miles away at Death Valley Junction. The railroad ceased regular operation in 1928 after the opening of the large Borax mine near Boron California. After a failed attempt to use the line for tourists the railroad was finally torn up in 1931 (Gower, 1969). |
