This view looking down the lower Titus Canyon shows sedimentary rocks of Cambrian age (The Cambrian period lasted between about 542 and 488 million years ago); dolomite units tend to be darker and denser than lighter gray and more massive limestone units. Some thin, reddish, sandstone layers stand out the distant cliff. These sandstone beds are probably part of the lower Cambrian Carrara Formation. Older, more massive, mostly pink, dense sandstone or quartzite units (including the Zabriskie Quartzite and Johnnie Formation) are easy to spot in the cliffs of the Grapevine Mountains and throughout the Death Valley region (Reynolds, 1976). |
