Giant desiccation polygons are actively forming on parts of Panamint Playa. These fissures extend an undetermined distance into the dry lakebed. When infrequent flooding occurs these fissures fill with water and may collapse, forming lines of pits across the playa surface. These pits provide a place for plants to become established. These ephemeral water traps support a variety of wildlife including rodents, insects, birds, lizards, rattlesnakes, and feral burros (Messina and others, 2005). |
