This granodiorite boulder is 3 to 4 meters in diameter. It is lodged in the lower end of the narrow gorges area of Marble Canyon. The source of the granodiorite boulders in marble canyon is many miles away in the core of the Cottonwood Mountains. These boulders have probably gradually (or episodically) migrated down canyon over long periods of time. It would take a major debris flood or flow to move a boulder of this size, and is a good reminder of the intensity, power, and dangers associated with floods in desert canyons. |
